Liara was not nervous because of her impending defense. That much was chiefly ceremony: she knew her materials well, she had studied for this moment for many years, and her thesis had been found to be sound.

She wasn't nervous because she was facing an uncertain future past this point either.

No, dithering outside in the hall, she was nervous for an entirely different reason: it had been a very long time since she had been in the company of other people than whatever professor was guiding the latest remote dig, Caius, and Yeul.

She was also nervous because no one on Thessia had seen a human before, and she was perpetually explaining.

"Goddess," she muttered, rubbing her forehead. She looked to Yeul.

[[ for Yeul and Caius ]]

"Goddess," Liara said.

She stared at the enormous stack of supply.

"Goddess," she repeated.

She brought her hand up to her palm. "--Even Caius does not eat this much," she muttered. "How are we going to get rid of all of these rations?"

She was speaking rather metaphorically, to an empty room. The leader of the expedition, idle-minded as she remained, had failed to order rations twice, so Liara had decided to step in and ensure that no one starved to death. Except she was beginning to realize that perhaps she had been somewhat too diligent in placing these orders.

"Yeul?" she called, looking helplessly towards the living areas. "...Are you hungry?"

[[ for she who is here, and phone calls. ]]

Liara did not sleep in the same room as Yeul did - that was a privilege she had been more than willing to offer to Caius, whose protective instincts still slightly surpassed her own. But she always woke before they did, her biological clock ticking out a full half hour before either of them stirred.

She laid awake for a short while, attempting to convince her paranoid mind once more that there was really no reason to check on Yeul. Caius would certainly let her know if anything happened in the night, and this site... it was safe. It was very safe. Even if pirates ever turned up, they'd have quick warning through the alarm system, and...

...of course, Yeul could simply have had a vision in the night and passed.

She ran this over in her mind for another fifteen minutes, and then she gave up on fighting. She tip-toed out of bed and across the hall to one of the other sleeping chambers, and dipped her head in, searching for Yeul's small frame.

Was any of it moving?

[[ for yeul. ]]

Liara had done her field work well; it was a knack she had learned from her mother. The internship she had managed to arrange was at a project that had only one archaeologist assigned, and Sarana did not have a reputation of showing much interest in anything other than Prothean studies. Yeul and Caius were of a strange species, yes, but they were not Prothean artifacts, and therefor Sarana barely paid them any attention at all.

They had had to spend the first few days setting up their beds and storing what few possessions they had brought. Liara had brought along a fair share of books, both from her universe and from Yeul's, just in case Yeul ever felt a need to read them.

But it was not books that kept them preoccupied today.

It was time to notify anyone who cared to know about their current situation. Liara was not someone who had a great circle of friends, but between her and meticulously picking through a list of people who might wish to know Yeul was alive, it was an afternoon's worth of work.

Liara had originally intended to come home simply because classes were no longer in session and she hadn't seen her mother in several months. But mother was mother, and within a few days the first social engagement had come, and then the second, and then the third.

It had taken a great amount of vigorous discussion with her mother, but at last Liara had been allowed to return to Fandom. She had not expected to want to do so, at least at first - but several months back had reminded her of all the things on Thessia that made her uncomfortable.

It had also left her missing Yeul and Karolina both.

Of course, it wouldn't be Fandom without being-- well, Fandom, and so she had been somewhat perturbed to be redirected to the ferry when she'd arrived at the island early in the morning. But she had taken it in stride (to a certain degree) and now she was unpacking in her room. Her next class would be soon, according to the schedule. Her unpacking moved quickly as a result.

At least she had been able to bring a few changes of clothes with her, this time around.

Last week, Liara had managed to get a dial tone. That had excited her more than a little - unfortunately, no one had answered, and so now she was left wondering if there had been a connection after all.

Then mother had caught her with the phone and she'd been scolded for taking a risk by using strange artifacts again, and she'd had to hide it. But now mother's oversight was slacking. She could take the phone again, jab in some numbers...

Ring, ring...

[[ expecting one, but open. ]]

It had been some time since Liara arrived, and her mother had not let her out of her sight. Only now was Benezia beginning to allow her some freedom again - a relief, because Liara had gotten tired of reading while her mother hovered over her.

She was worried: worried about Yeul, who'd up and disappeared one day, and worried about Karolina and what she might be thinking.

So it was that in this brief spell of freedom, she picked up her phone again and tried to dial a number. The first few times she had been unsuccessful - and that wasn't counting the times Benezia had walked in on her - but perhaps now...

...perhaps now she actually got a dial tone oh goddess--

Classes had finished. Now there was little for Liara to do but go through the last few books the library had remaining to her.

They didn't hold much draw to her, being fiction-- the human experience held only so much interest for her. Especially considering their odd fascination with... human males with their shirts off. Yes. That was quite odd. After an hour of squinting at the book, she cast it aside, onto her nightstand.

"I need a new hobby," she muttered wryly to herself.

A dolphin washed up on the beach on Monday morning.

Well, actually, that wasn't quite true: a dolphin made it halfway to the beach, before suddenly and inexplicably turning back into a blue girl, who flailed through the water using a very primitive approximation of the doggy paddle. That blue girl then washed up on the beach, where she spat out several mouthfuls of water and spluttered for three minutes straight.

Only then did she pick up what remained of her dignity and get up - only to lose said dignity almost immediately when she realized she was naked.

"Goddess!"

Sorry, Fandom, if you happened to catch sight of a blue blur streaking past you towards the dorms this morning. These things happened.

Liara needed some quiet time. Not... the same that she would have in her single room, but a different kind. Fresh air - not something she often craved, but as of late she kept finding herself wandering out here to watch the sunset.

And... all right. Perhaps it was time to admit that she missed Karolina.

She wrapped her arms around her as she walked along the water. It flooded over her shoes eventually, so she reached down and took them off. The water was cold, but not completely unpleasant, and... inexplicably, something within her pulled her towards it.

Her shoes still in hand, she paced several steps into the surf and merely stood there for a moment, soaking in the setting sun, and... ... where had her shoes gone?

For that matter, where had her dress gone? And her hands? And her feet?!?

The dolphin let out a stymied cry and slapped at the water with her tail. Fandom!

[[ establishy! unless you really want to run across a dolphin before she swims away. ]]

Most people spent this week exercising, taking showers, or, ahem, engaging in other activities. Liara? Liara was just doing what she always did, with about ten times as much focus. It was hardly new for her to channel emotion into learning, and if that learning was especially dedicated this week... it could be a lot worse.

Right now she had several books scattered around the room - a couple on the theorized workings of the multiverse, a couple about human history, a couple about human archaeological findings, one particularly engrossing tome about the architectural roots of this island. She had already read most of them, but there were still several left. And so she sat there on her bed, bent over the book in her lap, scrutinizing each word with intense focus.

All in all, she was not much different this week than she had been the last, or the one before that.

Since I'm awake anyway, I might as well post this...

So when the new characters were announced, someone almost immediately pinged me and went "ALL THE MASS EFFECT?"

Yes. All the Mass Effect. From me. Contain your shock, everybody! (Or at least everybody who was around for my disappearance and subsequent two-month tweeting-about-Mass-Effect spree back in March) This is one of my favorite franchises of all time, right alongside Ender's Game and Battlestar Galactica - yeah, my favorite genre is military space opera, hush - and, well, sometimes, the grabby hands.

In other words, if the following info post gets terribly fannish and waxes poetic, I'm, uh, sorry.

MASS EFFECT! The canon. )

The Teacher: Kaidan Alenko. )

The Student: Liara T'Soni. )

...and all of those other characters I have. )

Tales of the sci-fi fangirl, aka me. )
